I try to collect as much information about this comet as possible.
This is the first natural celestial object which I actually could see moving among the stars in
my telescope ( Angular velocity 49.3"/min ). It was closest to the earth on March 25 1996, at distance of 14.2 millions km
( 0.102 au. ).
It moved so fast that I only could use a small camera for photographing. The camera was mounted
on top of my Meade 10" LX3 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope, which I used for guiding on
the comet's head. I saw a tail at least 15° long.
As most people probably know, this comet was discovered by
Yuji Hyakutake who lives in Kagoshima in the southern part of Japan. On the morning of
December 26th 1995 he found the faint glow in the intersection of Virgo, Libra and Hydra with
his impressive 25X150 binoculars. The magnitude was 10.5 with a diameter of 3.5'.
The comet reached its perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) on May 1, 1996, at a distance of 0.231 au.
