Details:
Twenty-five years ago today, I stood in a frozen field (8 degrees F.) just north of Carrollton, MO (Carroll County), and beheld the beauty of Comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B6). This first image was from that morning, taken on Fuji Super G 400 film, later scanned and edited as filtered B&W to bring out the 50 degrees of ion, or plasma, tail, stretching from near Kochab in Ursa Minor, up overhad and down into the Coma Berenices star cluster. Can you identify the major constellations in this fish-eye photo? The second image was made ten days earlier; the very first I was able to shoot on the morning of March 16th, just before it was covered by clouds. At that time, the comet was way south in Libra, and you can see the double star Zubenelgenubi below the comet's head. See Ps. 19: 1-2.
