Details:
During the Kp5 aurora show on July 31/Aug 1, we were treated to a brief appearance of the famous STEVE arc in the east, south of the main aurora arc. And for a time STEVE seemed to be below a faint red SAR arc, which showed up only on the camera. But the brighter STEVE rays were visible to the eye for a time shortly after midnight. An hour later a bright arc appeared in the west -- STEVE again and this time accompanied by green picket fence fingers, but only for 2 to 3 minutes. They faded fast. The STEVE arc faded after 20 minutes. The main show was not that great, not nearly as bright and extensive as on July 29. But there was no STEVE that night — I shot a time-lapse to look for STEVE and SAR arcs but saw none that night. But this night, July 31, with the Kp at 5 again, we got a STEVE, though faint and short-lived. This was from southern Alberta, latitude 51° N.
