Details:
On Friday 24th, cloud cleared rapidly at sunset to reveal the 3-day old 11% illuminated Waxing Crescent Moon close to Venus appearing above the western shoulder of Transmitter Hill at 5.43 pm. These gradually increased in brightness until at 6.09 pm they became clearly visible in a dark cloud shadow radiating from the focus of a bright yellow volcanic sunset twilight arch over Christmas Pass. During the next five minutes the arch rapidly receded towards the horizon leaving just thin band of bright light above the summit of Murahwa Mountain. At 6.13 pm an unexpected pair of faint diverging crepuscular rays appeared and expanded upwards to produce a beautiful display in which the prominent arm reached both Moon and Venus engulfing them in a strong magenta glow. This amazing spectacle, which peaked at 6.15 pm lasted for less than five minutes before vanishing into thin air. Cameras: Hand-held and tripod mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 in sunset mode.
