Details:
On Friday 22nd April a Southern Hemisphere capture was obtained of Mercury setting 30 minutes after sunset near Transmitter Hill to the WNW of Mutare. Earlier sightings had been prevented by more than a week of unseasonal afternoon cloud and rain. Seven images in which Mercury is visible were obtained by taking a large number of pictures with a hand-held Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 in night scenery mode pointed in the direction of the anticipated setting point in case it might appear through some gaps in cloud close to the horizon. The successful images were used to produce the accompanying time-lapse animation which covers a period of two minutes. The colour from another spectacular volcanic sunset had been so bright just a few minutes earlier (last image) that there would have been no chance of the planet being photographed without the camera being set to night scenery mode. At no time was it visible to the naked eye.
