Details:
These images were taken onboard Flight to the Lights II. The second charter flight from New Zealand to the southern auroral oval organised by Ian Griffin and Orbit Travel. Our chartered Air New Zealand 787 departed Christchurch, NZ a little before 8pm local time on 22 March and headed south over the Southern Ocean. The aurorae were elusive at first, competing against lingering twilight to the west and it wasn't until about 1am that we could easily see bright auroral activity with the naked eye without having to hide under our blankets and covers taped around the cabin to block any ambient light bouncing back into our cameras. After a couple of hours zig-zagging under the auroral oval, we returned back to Christchurch just after 5am.
The photos don't do justice to the effect of watching the lights moving and changing with your own eyes. For us in New Zealand, this was an amazing experience and fantastic opportunity to get under the aurora rather than observing from afar.
All images shot with a Canon 6D, Samyang 24mmm f1.4, various exposure lengths, ISO 10000.
