Yes, the solar wind has indeed arrived! It sparked Auroras all night long up here in Inari in Finnish Lapland, starting as soon as the sky became dark enough. We even had some very intense purple fringe on a twilight background (allowing me to tick one of my dream shots from my own bucket list).
Despite the Bz remaining almost constantly negative, after this first outburst, the Auroras remained fairly calm for the next 2 hours. But then the sky exploded in very bright lights, lighting up the snow and all the landscape around me. For a while, I got so excited that it made me forget the cold that was biting me after spending 3 hours on a frozen lake with -28°C (-18°F).
Around midnight the sky was calm again, so I decided to start driving towards home. Just when I arrived, the sky exploded once more, showing lots of pink and a gorgeous corona.
This marks the end of the Aurora season for me as the next day I will travel home much further south in Europe. It has been a great season with many Aurora displays of excellent quality (i.e. bright and fast!), despite the approaching solar minimum. Most of these displays resulted from faster and denser solar wind after a coronal hole faced Earth. I already cannot wait to return next winter for more tours and adventures under the northern lights!
In between, I will be chasing noctilucent clouds, so I hope I'll have more chances to post on this site.
