Details:
The photos and animation show mercury, shining at magnitude -0.5 and 12.6 degrees away from the Sun, captured about half an hour after sunset, between 19:31 and 19:36 (UTC-2h), with a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 camera. I first spotted it through 30x70 binoculars when it was only 6 degrees above the sealine. The elusive planet was at superior conjunction on Oct.09 and will reach its greatest eastern elongation (21.9 degrees) on Nov.23. This early sighting of Mercury was facilitated by the fact that the section of the ecliptic where the planet is located is currently meeting the western horizon almost transversally as seen from mid-southern latitudes.
