Actually it was not a rainbow, which has its origin in water droplets, but a solar halo, generated by tiny ice crystals of which the high clouds are composed. You can distinguish two different forms of halo: a section of a circular halo centered around the sun, and a bright arc tangent to the circular halo in a point above the sun. Not present in the images but also often seen members of the halo family are the sundogs. Or moondogs, when appearing by moonlight.
