'Rare form of Aurora Borealis Hello, I have posted this report to several different sites and had help from a professional in the field in trying to find someone that could help us identify what I witnessed. I have enclosed the description I wrote down immediately after the display. Though it was bizarre and rare , I never saw it as anything other than a natural phenomenon associated with the aurora borealis. On August 7th, 2015 at 12:20 a.m. in the mountains of Colorado at 7800' elevation I saw the most unusual natural phenomenon I have ever witnessed. It was so rare I knew I had to immediately document what I saw and share it. I would love to know more about it and appreciate any feedback. Please note: I try to keep an open mind , but I am not a UFO or conspiracy alien abduction kind of guy, or spooky spirits person. As I saw it, this incident was just a natural phenomenon and nothing more. It seemed that way as it was happening and in retrospect it still does. Living in the Northwestern states and also spending untold hundreds of hours in the wilds at night, I have had the opportunity to see the Aurora quite a few times and of course it is always inspiring and different each time. But this was off the charts. This is what I recorded just minutes after it happened. "I had to write this down while fresh in my head. I just saw the most incredible natural phenomenon I have ever seen, it had to of been associated with the Aurora Borealis, though I have never seen anything like this before. I just happened to go outside for a few minutes and I saw some bluish white square shaped lights on a horizontal plane in the sky, which is unusual for the Northern Lights . I've seen them as green, red, light greenish yellow, but I figured it had to be them because they were off to the north-northwest .Very unusual too, in that they were in the form of numerous (4 or 5) square block-ish patterns of lights slowly moving and flashing that looked like windows laying flat with panes in them. As always I was grateful to see any Aurora and though unlike any I had seen before, I was not as yet amazed or awestruck. This went on a few minutes and then all of a sudden giant fast moving balls of greenish white lights which appeared to be approx 200 feet across, were flying horizon to horizon from south east to north west. It is very hard to judge the size ,distance and speed of such things, some Aurora seem to be miles away, others where you feel you can reach out and touch them , but I would say they were 500-800 feet off the ground and moving 300 mph. Rapidly moving giant balls of light like these moving horizontally across the sky I had never heard anything like this for the Northern Lights . They went from one side of the ranch to the other , and most of them trailed a long glowing stream of light behind it which rapidly disappeared. The torpedo or almost bullet shaped orbs all seemed to be confined within the same space in the sky, like in a huge invisible tube approximately 600 feet in diameter. They were not all in a perfectly straight trajectory, but seemed to move about within this confined tube shaped area. As this stream of lights went over you could hear a loud and distinct cracking noise that sounded like heavy feet walking non-stop in gravel is the best way I can describe it. I don't mind saying I was a bit spooked and fascinated at the same time. At first I did not associate the crackling noise with the orbs, but it was soon obvious that they were directly related to them. This went on a few minutes with 3 to 6 of the orbs of light in the sky all the time and probably close to a hundred of them went by in total, they almost appeared to be chasing each other, but of course I know they were not. Finally the last 8 or 10 whirled and stopped off in the NW . There they glowed a few seconds and then they all started flashing pretty quickly, then all took off in different directions or just seemed to evaporate and that was the end of it. Total time 8 to 10 minutes max. This was right after midnight and this light show took up an entire quadrant of the night sky. Weirdest thing I ever saw. I just checked online for any other sightings and also programmed my video recorder to record the local morning news to see if anyone else witnessed this. I am also searching online for examples of rapid moving balls of light. This was all very real. I wish I had pics. The following week I questioned everyone locally and also went online looking for anyone else that may have seen them or any other activity that night, but no luck. We were able to locate something sort of similar that was recorded in the 1880's. Thanks for any help or feedback. Michael PS -this photo is not of the occurrence, but of a Proton Arc which looks sort of similar, but not the same.'
