Details:
Bigtime storm with hurricane-force wind gusts and lots of rain arriving on southern side of Iceland, so I guided my little aurora hunting group to the east and north to find near-cloudless situation at Husavik at nightfall on northern coastline, even with a hole in the higher cirrus clouds... much of Iceland was overcast with either low and/or midlevel and/or high clouds, and smack at nightfall, with still-blue skies, the aurora appeared in our skies and danced for us ( me and my little private aurora hunting tour members ). first image here shot at 19h58 local time... skies not dark yet... aurora looked like airplane contrail at first glance but as the skies got darker minute by minute she delivered. I can now say with confidence, after having experienced it first-hand : it is indeed possible to see the aurora every single night while vacationing in Iceland ( except in summer when there's no dark night skies ), provided you relocate daily according to excellent short-time cloud forecast provided by the islandic weather service... not the Euro model but the more detailed Hirlam / Harmonie model ... of course you will often miss the aurora if you just hope for clear skies at night wherever you are, but if you chase the aurora for good and as priority one, you can see the Lady almost every night.
