Details:
We had a fabulous night of aurora watching on Feb 4, at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre in Churchill, Manitoba. We are at a latitude of 58° N, and directly under the main location of the auroral oval. Our site on the shores of Hudson's Bay is as far south in the world that the usual auroral oval appears. But being under the oval gives us displays on almost every clear night. On Feb 4 the auroral activity level was only 1 to 2 yet we still saw an beautiful display, starting out first low in our north but eventually moving to the south then covering the entire sky. These are a selection of images from a Kp Index night of 2! This was the first night of a week-long aurora viewing tour offered by the Centre, with guests from around the world here to enjoy the Lights. They got a good show on their first night here. However, temperatures were -35° C, with an extreme cold warning issued — that's cold!
