Details:
This evening was the closest approach between Mercury, Jupiter and Regulus (first picture). The animated gif is a 5 frame time-lapse movie with an interval of exactly 24 hours between captures that shows the relative movements from 3 - 7 August between Venus, Regulus, Jupiter, Mercury and the Christmas Pass horizon to the west of Mutare. The rate of movement of Mercury towards Jupiter and Regulus is very impressive. Venus is now moving rapidly downwards after having been high in the sky just after sunset for several months. To enjoy the animated gif full-screen please click on the low resolution version which appears after opening the thumbnail. The time-lapse photos are all 4 second x 7 zoom exposures taken with a tripod mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 compact camera in Night Scenery mode.
