When I heard about the G4 aurora forecast I immediately began searching for a foreground that would help to elevate the entire photo. I often use lighthouses in my photography when capturing moon rises, but for the aurora I didn't want a wide perspective. Instead I wanted to get up close to shoot the lighthouse from a low-angle. The only problem is, the lighthouses that are within a 1-2 hour window are not accessible up close, but then I remembered that the Plum Island light in Newburyport, MA was easily accessible and while not a large lighthouse, would be perfect for this perspective. I was also hoping that the storm would be strong enough to give us a corona, since I wanted to align it with the top of the lighthouse. Of course, when shooting aurora's, I know that what we hope to see and capture is often totally different than what actually happens, but in this case everything came together as soon as the sky became dark enough. I arrived to the lighthouse around 7pm, and at 7:15pm, after taking a few iPhone photos and knowing that the Corona was in position, I grabbed my tripod, Canon EOS R5, and headed across the street to the lighthouse. This was the first frame I captured after getting my focus and composition in place.
