Details:
Figured I'd better make my visit to Comet C/2023 E1 (Atlas) before it gets fainter post-perihelion and ion tail likely disappears. But summer at the Chiefland Astronomy Village in north Florida is no picnic -- sweltering heat and humidity, clouds of all genre, nightly lightning shows, and smoke from Canada and dust from Africa!! Nevertheless, I managed to capture a few photons from the comet and present here in several forms. The gif animation consists of 2 hours of 5-minute exposures showing the faint ion tail transiting a low surface brightness Draco galaxy (arrow) I could not identify using SIMBAD Astro Database. Fluctuation in the comet coma during the animation is a result of a changing atmospheric milieu. The inverted image is 2 hours of stacked exposures aligned on the comet nucleus. Pretty comet! Looking forward to the next great comet ..... and to our first dry cold front, perhaps October! :0
