Several tens of kilometers into the Atlantic it appeared, just a few minutes after sunset. Floating low (2° only) over the sea-line, there it was, a most unusual cloud, remarkably resembling the figure of a female face. During the next 20 minutes, that exotic lady from the sea would keep its smooth intricate look as it slowly hovered north until it entered earth´s shadow inside a beautiful set of conspicuous crepuscular rays. What an exquisite and unique display! Could that cloud formation with such an extraordinary pattern have originated from a contrail left by an airplane that passed near Rio de Janeiro? Maybe. The photos were taken in manual mode with a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 camera from 21:49 until 22:09 UT.

According to Joselia Pegorim, a Brazilian meteorologist, the exotic vertical cloud pattern could possibly have originated from cirrus divergence bands at approximately 10 km altitude. It could also be the leftover of cumulonimbus formations after a storm.
