Details:
it looked liken a white fireball formation, not dissimilar to a comet, I'd assume. it traveled a steady pace east to west, and possibly could have made landfall. as it got closer to the horizon it turned from white to orange to firey red

It was an airplane with a short contrail. And hopefully it made a landing instead of landfall :)

As LandyGyebnar says, it was typically an airplane.
If it were a meteor, it would shoot and disappear so quickly, in a second or so, that you could not take more than one photo (nor any photos) after you found it.
If it were a comet (too bright!), it would move not quickly but so slowly, as slow as other stars, that you could feel that the object did not travel but stop.

without more info or a video, this seems to be a aircraft contrail. It could very well be space junk reentering, but that would most likely have appeared on the NASA reentry website or the heavens above website. As stated a meteorite would have moved MUCH faster - check out the Russian meteor videos on you tube. A comet, it would takes hours or days to see significant change in it position in the sky, as well as this bright , would have been globally newsworthy for days!
