One man’s light pollution is another man’s photo op! As a bit of a newcomer to astrophotography, this is my third and most successful attempt at a southern sky milky way exposure. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with the result. 180 degree Milky Way panorama from 9 x 15” exposures. Longer exposures would have let the light pollution take over. The colours are real, and come from the light of the Byron Lighthouse on the left, the township itself, the industrial area and the Pacific Highway bypass construction. There are clear views of Eta Carina and I love how the Large Magellanic Cloud looks like the pupil in the cosmic eye. Settings: 9 x 15s / 11mm / ISO 1600 / f2.8 Nikon DSL5100 Tokina 11mm - 16mm f2.8 (Public Domain)
