Details:
This was my first try at capturing the Milky Way, and first photos using my new Celestron 4SE mount to piggyback my Nikon D5100 with its standard kit lens. The heavy clouds parted for a mere 30 minutes, just long enough to setup the tracking and take 11 x 45s exposures @ 18mm f/3.5 ISO 1600 stitched together as a vertical panorama. Without stacking it's pretty noisy with lens distortion and sticking errors - more art than science!
The top band of yellow is from the setting moonlight out of frame, the red from the minor light pollution from the town. The roof of my driveway carport is in the lower right.
Antares shines brightly in the lower left, and the Southern Cross is framed nicely in the upper middle above the radiant Alpha Cen A and below the Carina Nebula. A typically Australian Milky Way from the rainbow region, Byron Bay, NSW.
