At approximately 6 p.m. on 04-06-2014 I noticed a rainbow in my son-in-law's car window. Curious as to why it was there I looked up and saw the rainbow directly overhead. I was amazed at the fact that the rainbow bowed in 2 directions. One with the Sun and one away. All emanating from the same center. I also noticed the ring around the Sun at the same time. My guess is this was caused by ice in the upper atmosphere. Would I be correct? The second photo I find interesting in that all rays are headed away from the Sun except from the bright area in the upper portion of the photo which appear to be spreading out and headed towards the Sun. I checked my camera's lens to see if there were any smudges and found none.

Ok, so I think I have my first ever photo of a Sun dog. I Googled images and now understand the 22 & 46 degree halos. I also understand why the rainbow bends in 2 different directions, the circumzenith arc. But what I dont understand is why the reflected light rays seem to be radiating back to the direction of the Sun from the dog? And why isnt the dog located at the parhelic arc? Can anyone answer that for me? What I am guessing to be a dog is at about 12:30 - 1:00 oclock position just above the 22 degree halo. No big deal, just curious is all.

The second image either shows the circumzenithal arc or the 22 degree halo, I cant tell cause I cant see anything more than what a circumzenithal arc would take up. As for the thing you think is a sundog is actually a lens flare and not in the sky at all!

GangnamStyle is correct, that is not a sundog on the 22 deg halo but a lens flare. They are caused by various internal reflections and refractions inside your camera lenses, no smudges necessary. On the other hand, there might be a hint of an upper tangent arc in the first picture?

Going by a diagram I saw on Google Images I named the arcs the way I saw them. I saw no other arcs than what have shown up in the photos. The rainbow in the first photo is the arc that bent in 2 different directions so assumed that the upper half may have been the circumzenith arc as shown in the diagram on Google. The lower portion of the rainbow bending towards the Sun I assumed would have been the 46 degree halo also shown. As for the second photo as you can see the rainbow is not present, it was out of frame. Having seen no other halos any closer to the Sun can I assume the whitish halo would then be the 22 degree? Not having any experience with the naming of all the parts in these types of events I just want to make sure I am understanding all that I saw. Kind of like having an Aha moment next time this should happen. Thanks for responding.
