Details:
Tony, Some months ago I purchased Sky & Telescope's Moon Globe and for a period of time I noticed the figure of what I call "The Volleyball Player in the Moon" which is comprised of The Sea of Serenity as the head, with The Sea of Tranquility and Sea of Fertility as it's body. The Sea of Tranquility, Bay of Roughness and Sea of Nectars make up it's right arm and hand. The Sea of Crises is the volleyball. So The volleyball player is actually preparing to hit the ball. Checking Wickipedia, it is my understanding that Europeans thought it was a man and his dog...Serenity, Tranquility and Fertility being the man and Crises being a dog. I have e-mailed Bill Dembowski from ALPO and Steve Nathan @ The Astronomical League but as yet have not seen a reply. The Volleyball Player, which may well be a female volleyball player, can be seen a few days before full moon to a few days after full moon. I want to thank Suzy Webb of Brisbane, Australia as the first person to recognize it. My first image here is of my Sky & Telescope Moon Globe. Second image is the Volleyball Player sketched. Third image is a comparison image. I took all the images through my Astroscan telescope. Cordially, P Edward Murray BMAA Inc. Slooh Observatory member
