Details:
The photos show an interesting lenticular cloud atop a cumulus formation hovering over the northwestern horizon of Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. The convective tower of the cumulus cloud created an updraft that carried moisture to its top, where dew point was reached and ice crystals were created, forming the lenticular cloud. Known as pileus, scarf or cap cloud, the formation was ablaze with light from the setting Sun, yielding a fine display at dusk. A Sony DSC-HX300 camera was used for the shots, taken between 21:10 and 21:15 UTC. The third photo also shows wavelike formations, including undulatus and Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds.
