I have no idea what caused the halo. I have used this star hundreds of times to focus my camera before I take pictures of other objects, but have never seen this halo before. The star is Sirius and it always has the star burst since it is so bright. Maybe someone can venture a guess at what caused the halo?

Lens caused it. Sirius is very bright and so able to produce such lens flare.

Slight haze/fog in the atmosphere increases scatter and creates halos around bright objects. The sky might still look really clear to the eye when this happens.

it does look like some lens or sensor artifact. did you use a different camera or zoom setting on this photo than on ones without halo? possibly the digital zoom range?

I used a higher ISO, I dont know if that would have any affect. The sky did look clear, and Sirius looked unusually bright. I checked some of my older shots of Sirius and I did see a very slight or dim halo after enlarging the image. So I guess it has happened before.

Thanks

Im located in Inverness Florida, North of you. Im not sure if you and the others have noticed jets flying over leaving Chem Trails. The Chem Trails are white in color and are long (for mile) when they begin to fall apart, they have the appearance, they take the form of clouds, and the sky has a haze over it. Im not that is what caused this, but it is something to keep an eye on. The jets will chis cross their patterns giving the appearance of a checker board. Keep looking up and you will see these Chem Trails. I have taken a number of pictures of these Chem Trails. There is a radio station Coast to Coast 99.9 FM or even 99.9 Am that was requesting these type of pictures.
I hope this has been some help to those who have an interest in the haze in the skies.
