Details:
These are scenes of the aurora display we saw on Sunday, Feb 9 from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on the shore of Hudson Bay in Manitoba. Despite indicators pointing to a fabulous display, for most of the night the aurora appeared as no more than faint diffuse arcs, brightening periodically, as here, into more well-defined forms worth photographing. With the bright waxing Moon, auroras now have to be even brighter than usual to show up in our sky, especially when we have high haze and cloud as we did Sunday night. Our tour group enjoyed the display, such as it was when it performed. Through the night I was also watching the live video feed from the AuroraMax camera in Yellowknife to the west of us, and noted that when the aurora brightened and moved south for them it did so for us as well in Churchill.
