Details:
My observing site was located some 90 km east of downtown Rio de Janeiro and the date was January 17, 2008. It was a very warm and cloudy afternoon and sunset would happen half an hour later. Suddenly the wind got gusty and the clouds became agitated and roughened, apparently announcing an approaching summer storm. The whole sky darkened, acquiring a threatening appearance. It seemed as if the right conditions to stir the local troposphere had met, making it vibrate as a membrane to produce strange wave and rotational patterns in the clouds. A few minutes had sufficed for those unusual undulated and vortex-like formations to fill the whole sky. Surprisingly, after reaching a maximum degree of organization, the whole display gradually collapsed, as fast as it had formed and the storm never came. I then learned that those exotic cloud formations had not been named yet. A year later, they were designated undulatus asperatus. These photos of the asperatus were taken from 21:10 to 21:15 UTC.
