Details:
Weather changed from -37C to -7C and it was all full of ice crystals so there was all kinds of haloes to shoot photos, but the best and rarest was this extra beautiful 20min lasted ellipse haloe between two fjelds. I made these photos with my very best friend and colleague Kari Autto.

Beautiful pictures! On the frontpage an explanation is sought in different ice crystal shapes but maybe its more simple. Much like how the sun can show large distortion in shape. As it sets or raises because of different thermal layers in the air. I think the halo was actually round but because of the sudden drop in temperature different layers of air where created. Seen from the ground the halo then distorts to this elliptical shape. If so the the lower the moon is in the sky the stronger this effect would be.

Thanks for sharing a nice observation. Im also very happy to see a correct exposure for once - all too often nigh-time shots are overexposed (or PhotoShopped to be like that) and therefore untrue. In these shots of yours the luminosity is what the eye sees and thats the only way I like it.
