Details:
The temperature was below zero and it was sundown. There was an ice fog going on. I looked out towards the mountians and found this in a valley just to the west of us.

Ginger it depends on how far the arc was from the sun. It seems to be a fine diamond dust (which means the ice fogs particles) halo, in case it was 22 degrees from the sun it was a 22 deg. halo (maybe with sundog not really visible), in case it was the double distance it was an infralateral arc.

Monica, the sun was just setting behind Pikes Peak, so it was much higher in the sky than the rainbow. The rainbow was low in a valley and I think the suns rays were shining at an angle. I think it was more than 22 degrees. So possibly it was the infralateral arc.

Monica, also, in the photo you can see a slanted piece of mountain, that is an old mine. Right behind is the Front Range. To the left of the mine and farther back is Pikes Peak, there is a thin layer of white cloud outlining the mountain. If I had your email I could send you a picture of all this during a warmer day.

HP1954, I sent the picture to the optics page. I also sent a comparison pic of the same area, but in the day time. Thanks

You are welcome, that is such a great web site. I spent an hour there one day and learned so much and really enjoyed the terrific photos also.
I keep it in my bookmarks as an online reference.

HP1954, I did the same, bookmarked it. It is amazing. Got a reply from Les. He said I captured a piece of the 22 degree halo. Mystery solved. Was cool to get a reply email from Les.
Happy New Year every one.
