The most magnificent display of rainbow color clouds surrounding the Moon that I have ever seen came the night of December 17 , 2013 seen from my home in Cody Wyoming . A huge swath of high cirrus clouds produced brilliant colors in several concentric bands, undulating because the clouds were moving in strong upper level wind currents ( we call them " Chinook Clouds" here in Wyoming. ) I took multiple exposures and combined three frames using standard HDR technique in Photoshop to capture and display the widest possible tonal range and color subtlety. Nikon Coolpix P7800 on tripod, lens zoomed out to 28mm wide setting; exposures of 0.5 - 5 secs. at f/2.0 at ISO 800 approximately . I note that three days earlier, the Chinese space program softlanded a lunar rover named " Jade Rabbit" on the surface of the Moon , in the Sinus Iridum region , also known as the " Bay of Rainbows ". A fine bay of rainbows, indeed !
