Hi, I tried a David Malin trick on Nova Centauri 2013 on Saturday night (2013 Dec 07, 1415 hrs UT). About every 30 seconds I unfocused the lens more to try and make the nova a diffuse cone with the light spread over a greater area so as to reveal its colour. I used a Canon 500D DSLR camera with a Mamiya 35mm lens at f4. The untracked exposure was 6.5 minutes at 800 iso. Comparing it to other stars, based on the colour only, I’d say the spectral type is K (but I may be off!). I estimated the nova to be about magnitude 3.9.
