Looks like a searchlight. Is there a town where that beam points down?

Most curious. what was the exact time? Did you see any movement and in what direction.
A few years ago if you remember, the ISS dumped some stuff, and produced a similar trail, however not as long as this. This almost looks ground based, but then again, it gets slightly dimmer at the horizon.
I dont see this coming from a metropolis either.
Things that make you go hmmm.

Oops, just looked at your second image. It appears to be moving rapidly faster than earths rotation. Very cool capture

A rocket fuel dump most likely: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap071116.html

Awesome photo! Was the object flying north to south? Is that the sun setting and the object flying in between the sun and Venus?

You may likely find a lighthouse at the point of that beam.

Buddina lighthouse would be right about there, would it not?

going by the length jet trail its way too slow to be meteor, looks like at least a 5 to 10 second exposure, being its moving its not a lighthouse.. I think they may be right its a rocket or some type of fuel dump or perhaps a satellite or space junk reentering but I would expect that to be faster also

This is most likely a contrail of a high altitude aircraft, probably military. It could be a hypersonic ramjet causing this display.
