Details:
While out aurora hunting on Friday night I got waylaid by these awesome light pillars. It's my understanding that they take shape when flat ice crystals form in the sky and flutter down like leaves. The countless horizontal facets of ice reflect the light source straight down forming a pillar of light. Photo taken from Anchorage, Alaska on 11/30/13 at 12:45 am in -5° F temperatures. The inward tilting on one of the photos is from the distortion caused by a 14mm ultra-wide rectilinear lens and had a similar appearance to an aurora corona.
