This photo shows this morning's partial solar eclipse rising behind the Empire State Building in New York City. I used a Canon 40D and a Canon 400mm f/5.6L lens.

How is picture possible? I face west and I can see the Empire State Building from my apartment building on Long Island...this morning I was up to see the sky full of clouds and the sun does not rise in the west. It is a beautiful pix though.

Is this a single exposure? If so, did you need to crop in tightly? The sun look larger than I expected from a 400mm lens.

There is a place called New Jersey, just across the Hudson river. There you can look east, with the sunrise behind the island of Manhattan. You may also notice a dark layer of clouds just above the sun in this photo.

Magnificent. At the same time I was doing another photo from Madrid (40 º N latitude) where it was noon and from where you saw the moon barely touching the Sun
