Details:
Our astronomy club recently purchased a new Celestron CGE Pro Edge 14 telescope. I spent the evening of October 25th trying to become acclimated to the new telescope in the hopes of using it in conjunction with my DSLR camera for imaging. We had been entertaining a group of Girl Scouts at our observatory, and had pointed our new telescope at M-57 The Ring Nebula. After they were finished, I decided to try imaging this object with my Canon Rebel XTi DSLR camera. After obtaining a very rough focus, I decided to see how good it would track in its current configuration, utilizing one minute exposures at two minute intervals. On the fourth of these images, while the shutter was still open, I glanced over the OTA and saw a meteor fall through Lyra, but I was not sure if I had captured this event until my exposure was completed. I usually see other people capturing images similar to this, such as a plane flying across the disk of the sun or the moon, but this was my very first image of a meteor AND a deep sky object in one frame. Although its not exactly in the best focus, the meteor did leave a track across the frame. This image was captured at ISO 800 as a single one minute exposure at prime focus. I had to over enhance it a bit to see the meteor trail. Several other meteors were observed as well, but this was my first one I captured on camera.
