I have a theory that applies to regions away from sunspots. Here, darker areas are dark because they are cooler and they are cooler because they are further from the hot surface of the Sun. This is why filaments are always darker than the lower surrounding area. What I did was record a large filament animation which is shown on the second video here. I then turned it into a 3D terrain where the original dark areas are higher and the original light areas are lower. The result is shown in the first video. My theory is probably wrong but it does produce realistic terrains and maybe shows the surface structure better. It also shows what appears to be a wind sweeping across the surface diagonally which is not seen in the original. I had a cloud free day so not sure where the wind came from. Anyhoos, nice to see a dragon swimming across the solar surface. Playback is 450x real time.
