Details:
Supernova 2026kid is a Type II supernova discovered on April 22, 2026, by Japanese astronomer Yasuo Sano. Located in the constellation Draco, the cosmic explosion marked the catastrophic destruction of a massive star within NGC 5907, a famous edge-on spiral galaxy popularly known as the "Splinter Galaxy" or "Knife Edge Galaxy." Because NGC 5907 is oriented nearly perfectly sideways from Earth's perspective, the supernova appeared relatively dim—peaking at a visual magnitude of roughly 14.6 to 15.7—as its light was heavily obscured and scattered by the thick dust and material inside the host galaxy's disk. Despite this interstellar dimming, the event captured the attention of the global astronomy community and amateur astrophotographers alike, even earning a feature on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) in May 2026 as it gradually brightened and faded over the course of several weeks. During my observation on June 3, 2026 the visual magnitude was 15.7. 🔭 Technical Details: Telescope: Meade 12” LX-90 SCT with Antares Focal Reducer Camera: ZWO ASI071MC (cooled to 0C) BIN2 Mount: Celestron CGX-L pier mounted Capture: 45 x 60 seconds Location: The Dark Side Observatory (W59), Weatherly, PA (Bortle 4) Processing: DeepSkyStacker + PixInsight + Tycho Tracker Image Date: June 3, 2026.
