Details:
On June 3 observed 220P/McNaught with a coma 8' wide with a brighter middle coma and a much fainter outer coma as can be seen in the Astrometrica image on the right used to calculate the comet magnitude of 8.9 with a short 2.4' long tail visible. On June 5 the Moon made it a little more difficult to see the coma which appeared to be 7' wide but the dust tail was now 4.2' long with a calculated comet magnitude of 8.7, the same magnitude as calculated on June 4. So, did it get hit by something or just a major eruption as 220P approaches perihelion on June 14. A long way from the Sun at 1.56AU on May 30-31 to have a major eruption that increases its brightness by about 7000 times.
