PHANTOM GALAXY: Had a break in the foggy overcast here in central California, thought I would have a couple of hours to image M74. Sadly the conditions only lasted for an hour. Messier 74 (M74), also known as the Phantom Galaxy, is a face-on spiral galaxy located about 32 million light-years away in the constellation Pisces, notable for its grand-design structure with well-defined spiral arms. It's a challenging object for visual observation due to its low surface brightness, but it's a popular target for astrophotography, revealing its symmetrical arms dotted with star-forming regions. M74 is the brightest member of its galaxy group and is similar in size to the Milky Way. 12/17/25.
