Despite the Nearly Full Moon, the Golden Comet, C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) Positions Itself by the Leo Triplet November 07 2025
Project notes:
Fairly accurate depiction of the color of C/2025 K1 (ATLAS).
SPCC white balance calibrated.
Increased the color saturation to make the “color” stand out.
Once again this comet is a rarity, poor in the the green/blue carbon compounds and rich in the redder OH- and H2O+ ions.
The moon was at 94% and a magnitude close to 11.8.
I used the full dynamic range of the camera and shortened exposures to lessen the effect of the moonlight.
The comet aligned and stacked images show the fan-shaped dust tail, streamers and the plasma tail exiting the FOV.
Measured brightness magnitude 9.8.
The coma appears to be somewhat flattened and the nucleus appears somewhat elongated upon close inspection.
My thanks goes out to Paul Mortfield for suggesting this encounter with the Leo Triplet of Galaxies was ideal for my setup.
