Details:
With complete knowledge the near full moonlight would trash most of the aurorae potential, I made the 75 mile trek from DC metro filled with eternally sprung hope. From the 3,300 ft elevation at Stoney Man overlook, a cold but windless night embraced the Shenandoah Valley below as the lights of Luray began to twinkle under a cloudless starry sky. A perfect night for aurora shooting UNTIL the slightly waning gibbous appeared over a mountain top to the north. Waited patiently, checking iPhone cam for signs of auroral activity and snapped some interesting moon shadow shots to kill time (see last photo which I call “Fallen Stars”). By 9:40P EST, the phone began showing some faint, telltale pink. Fired up the R5 with EF 24-70 2.8 lens with RF adapter and started shooting. Really took a little teasing with Photoshop to bring out any color/detail from the brightly moonlit scene.
