We don't get many auroras here in Florida and the current nice solar cycle is racing by. So my son Chad and I decided to take our chances with Dan Zafra's "Capture the Atlas" Iceland Northern Lights Tour. On the night of September 28-29, a cold front swept through western Iceland and provided us with wonderful conditions at the Gullfoss Waterfall on the Hvita River in southwest Iceland. As soon as it got dark, the auroras were visible but we were all fighting misty moisture coming off the waterfall soaking us and our cameras as if it was raining! But by 11 pm the wind switched direction and provided us with drier conditions to image the aurora looking down the Gullfoss Canyon. While imaging the aurora, someone exploring the riverbed used a massive spotlight aimed at the waterfall which drew our ire until the brightened foreground image displayed on the camera screen. The two seconds of brilliant spotlight lit up the waterfall and red brambleberry landscape almost like daylight including generating rainbows suspended in the waterfall mist. Expert guides Prince Berkoh and Francesco Dall'Olmo provided invaluable advice to achieve the proper camera settings. Chad and I used a Canon RA full frame mirrorless camera and 7Artisans 10mm f/2.8 fisheye lens to obtain our Gullfoss photo; an annotated version is also attached. We also created a fun circumpolar aurora effort as well as an image of Chad and I praying for both good weather and auroras! "Capture the Atlas" is a first-class tour operator and we look forward to joining them on future Milky Way Tours.
