Details:
On 2025 July 26 Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS also known as C/2025 N1 (ATLAS) was magnitude 17.0 and 269 million miles from Earth. According to some of the big observatories the comet was moving at 137,000 mph upon discovery, the comet may be as large as 7 miles wide with a very short tail and it is just passing through our Solar System on its journey from somewhere else in our Milky Way. Unfortunately for us Earthlings the comet is basically on the other side of the Sun from Earth and will make its close approach to Earth in October at 170 million miles from Earth when it is behind the Sun as seen from Earth. The comet may brighten to magnitude 12 before it goes behind the Sun and after it emerges from behind the Sun as seen from Earth. The gif animation is a collection of 10 images each of which is a stack of 18x10 second images taken with a 91mm f/4.9 refractor and an ASI533MM camera using no filters.
