Details:
The lenses of many telescopes tonight are focused on this scene: the red planet Mars (above) at a close distance (44 arc minutes) from the blue star Regulus (below it) in the constellation Leo! Of course, it is an illusion, because Mars is 1.8 astronomical units away from us, that is. 273.6 million km, while Regulus is a binary star 79 light years away. The image was taken through the telescope's finder, and the star 31A Leo, also a binary system 295 light-years away, is also noted below.
