Details:
The great aurora of May 31/June 1, 2025, here looking straight up in a 360º panorama, with the horizon all around and the zenith at centre. This records the entire sky during the peak of the substorm at about 1:30 am MDT with the curtains lighting up with a range of colours blending together, and converging at the magnetic zenith, which is south of (below here) the true zenith. South is at bottom here, and north at the top, with east at left and west at right.
The Kp Index peaked at Kp8 this night.
Another camera is at work at bottom shooting a time-lapse with a fish-eye lens. The stars of Scorpius are at bottom low on the southern horizon and in the only part of the sky free of aurora, sort of!
Technical:
A stitch of 8 segments, 45º apart, each a 5-second exposure taken in rapid succession, with the Viltrox 16mm rectilinear lens at f/1.8 on the Nikon Z6III at ISO 800, and in portrait orientation. Stitched with PTGui which does a fine job blending images in a difficult subject like this with content changing from segment to segment.
