Details:
It was a good thing the CME stream arrived a night earlier than had been predicted as May31 into June 1 was mostly clear here in southern Alberta, while clouds and rain are predicted for June 1/2. The evening started with a bright but diffuse band to the north which moved south and took structure with tall rays and curtains, leaving the north free of aurora for a time. About 1:30 am MDT a substorm arrived brightening the aurora and expanding it to fill the sky. For a time reds were visible to the unaided eye. This was not as intense a show as on May 10, 2024, and not as bright as a Kp8-level show would lead you to expect. But it was a fine display, the best so far this year for me. These images are from around the time of the substorm.
