It ain't over until it is over. The US ended up on the short end on both nights when the two CMEs hit. Positive Bz killed them. However, you were right, Tony, that the magnetosphere was still quite disturbed from the powerful storms even on the 18th here on the east coast. At 42N, one substorm was triggered after another under what is normally considered bleak conditions for mid latitudes (Kp 2.3 to 4, HPI 20s to 40s). The aurora was easily visible to the naked eye, not just photographic. I was stunned how willingly the columns sprouted even with small negative Bz. It seemed that even a butterfly's sneeze would trigger them :)
