Details:
I was trying to catch aurora through clouds last night during the G2 geomagnetic storm. At one point, I started getting short vertical lines in between the clouds. What gave the pillars away was the fact that they were stationary. I was surprised because it was quite warm (50F) and I always thought they form only when it is freezing. However, all that's needed is a layer in the atmosphere that is cold enough. Some of the pillars must have come from very distant light sources.
