Details:
What an incredible night, one of the best aurora displays (if not the best) I’ve ever seen, and that's saying something, having been chasing aurora for more than 35 years now !!. I started off down at Dunottar Castle where there was a big arc from twilight, which slowly moved southward whilst showing occasional bright rays. By 2100 UTC it was cloudy so I decided to head back to Chapel of Garioch, and it wasn’t long before the clouds cleared to reveal an aurora across much of the sky, brightest towards the southern horizon. Activity slowly increased with multiple band overhead and then as the oval retreated southward it exploded into life at around 2320 UTC, with probably the brightest aurora I’ve seen, lighting up the ground and casting shadows, as rays extended from near the horizon to zenith. In my view this was far better than the 10th May display, and comparable if not better than the display on the 24th March 1991.
