Details:
Went outside to check for auroras, but instead observed fairly bright red arcs in the northern sky, extending up from the northwest horizon from my location in northern Illinois. Based on their appearance, I suspect these are SARs. They started to become visible before the colors of dusk had faded (as shown in the 2nd photo) and were still going strong an hour later. They were just bright enough to perceive with the naked eye.
