Details:
Just before midnight last evening I peeked out my bedroom window and saw a green glow on the northern horizon. I was quite surprised to see this as there was no official prediction of an Aurora for this evening. So I grabbed my digital camera & tripod and took a quick trip down to a site near me with a clear view to the north. Attached is an image of the Aurora looking to the North with the City of Hamilton and the Bitterroot Mountain range on the left (west) and the Sapphire Mountain Range on the right (East). The display was nothing like that on May 10/11 of this year but very pleasing none the less with some nice vertical pillars and shades of green, yellow, red and orange evident to the camera sensor. The display lasted until just past midnight when the waning gibbous Moon rose over the Sapphire Mountains and essentially washed out the sky and the Aurora display. Sometimes it is nice to be surprised!
