Details:
This morning I caught an SAR (stable auroral red arc) peeking over the northern horizon. It's rare for such phenomena to occur in the skies over Southern California's Anza-Borrego Desert, but they can show up when there's a strong geomagnetic storm in progress.
Though it was not visible to the eye, the camera sure picked it up. I discovered it while shooting toward the eastern sky; a reddish hue kept appearing on the left side of my wide-angle frame. I recognized it immediately and began shooting in that direction instead.
The yellowish glow that appears below the red arc is the light pollution coming from the desert communities along I-10 to our north.
